Gettin' My Craft On

I am so happy to be in a house again. We took a break from it during job transitions and then moving across the country transitions, and I have really missed being able to get crafty and create a fun home for my family. Not that the apartment wasn't fun...but you know.

I've been painting and decorating kids bedrooms and also trying to get the living spaces spruced up for fall. Lately I've found "gothic glam" Halloween decor to be...well...cute! Call me crazy, but I think it can be quite whimsical. This year I decided to try my hand at it on a small scale, and I even have the perfect fireplace in my formal living room! Bear in mind, this year is only a small representation of what I hope to have in the years to come---that if I still find I want to do it then!

I am also wanting to do it on a budget, don't want to spend a lot on something I'm not sure of--so off to the dollar store I went! I got glitter skeletons, spiderwebs/plastic spiders, fake barbed wire, chains, a headstone and pillar candles. I also picked up a red pillar candle and lit it and dripped the red wax down the white candles (can't tell in this cell phone pic)--but it really added to the spookiness.

Down the road I want to do a bunch of black and white glitter pumpkins and skulls, a dark flower arrangement and more votives and candles. But for now, I think it turned out quite darling!

I have another fire place just off my kitchen in what we call the Hearth Room. This room I am completely in love with. The fireplace is brownish/reddish brick and the entire room is flanked with tall dramatic windows and half shutters. *Love*

I am so excited to have found furniture (for really cheap!) to add to the country feel I was after. The settee on the right is so darling and so comfortable in real life. You'll have to come visit me to see it in person!

See those fabric pumpkins on the hearth there? I MADE THOSE!!! Some friends got together and one of them taught us how to do them--they are super easy and way cuter than anything I've found in the stores. I made two sets of 'em--the other set is in my formal LR.

This is looking at the other side of the fireplace towards the tall windows. I hung up those window treatments or "mistreatments" as The Nesting Place blog likes to call them. I'm learning "It doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful" from this blog and it has given me courage to try things I wouldn't have dared before. It's amazing what a little hot glue and some furniture tacks can do! Too bad this picture is blurry, you can't see my awesome pom-pom fringe on the bottom of the curtains. There are many more projects and photos to come! I will include the kids rooms photos, and more of my new furniture I scored from a friend who was getting rid of them. I really got a killer deal and I absolutely LOVE everything I picked up--it all fits perfectly in my home, it's like it was meant to be! Hopefully I'll have a camera soon to document all the decorating fun we are having :)
