Weaning Owen, part 2

Owen was my hardest baby to wean. The other three didn't really care whether they got their food from me or a bottle, as long as they were fed. Owen, however, has always been partial to his mama. He wouldn't go near a bottle until he was almost a year, and the actual weaning didn't occur until around 14 months. It was a huge celebration at our house.

Since then Owen's attachment to, ahem, me, hasn't gone away. And by me, I mean those which supplied his food the first year of his life. Yep, those. He has figured out that the place which used to bring his tummy comfort, can now bring his entire being comfort. One slip of his hand down the front of my shirt brings warmth and softness and....comfort. So anyway. It's gotten to the point where I don't even notice when his little hand wanders and it has happened in public more times than I can count.

But it works!

Crying spells, tantrums and hurts can all be cured with the simple gesture of me picking him up and his hand going immediately to his soft spot. It's a non reaction, he just does it without thinking. And I don't even notice.

But it's becoming a problem.

Like when I picked him up from the daycare at the gym yesterday and I was all sweaty and his little hand rode the slippery slope down to his happiness. Gross. Or this morning, when Owen woke up too early and I got him out of bed and pulled my collar down FOR him so he'd stop crying and go back to sleep. Without even thinking. Or like right now! I'm sitting on the couch typing on the laptop and Owen is standing right next to me with his hand resting comfortably in Cleveland. This has got to stop!

So now I find myself in the dilemma of weaning him off of me AGAIN. Hopefully before kindergarten, because boy, how awkward would THAT parent-teacher conference be!

Oh, men! They love what they love don't they. I am not sure why they are so mezmorized by our *friends*. Our *friends* seem to talk to them, but for some reason we cannot hear what they hear.

I have to say that I, too, have been a stand in for Mommy's chest! Glad I could oblige. Owen sure "gets around" doesn't he?

I am laughing so hard it hurts. Poor Jenni, good luck with the weaning.

I must say that he hasn't ever attempted that with me. He must realize that there isn't anything there to hold! Ha! Ha!

haha! Come to think of it, he does get around with the ladies! He's a smooth operator isn't he?

JENNIFER!!!
OH MY GOODNESS, should you be sharing this information with the WHOLE WORLD? Good thing I am coming out next week, sounds like we need to have a mother daughter talk about what is appropriate to share and what is not. (LOL)
I can’t wait to give my grandbabies loves. I went to Macey’s department store today and got you a special surprise??? Can you guess what it is???
Love you, mom

That is so funny!!! I was literally laughing out loud when I was reading this. At least he isn't trying to go to Cleavland on all the neighbors and people in your ward.

If you are a mom chances are you have been there! I am trying to get rid of Kelsi's "cuppie" and I told her I am going to throw it in the garbage, she told me I was a mean mommy and made her cry!
Can you blame her? Since they are born they have a boob, bottle or cuppie? Its all they know!

Hey Jeff~ I think your post made me blush a little! Definately info to share w/ friends over a diet coke!. (Definately not a post your teenage cousins should read!) I can hear Syd now "eeewwww gross!!!" I have weaned 6 kids, never had one like Little O :) I'll bet Walker and Texas Ranger weren't near as hard to wean!! ;) (BTW - You do know that Grandpa Carter reads your blog - right? (JK!!!)) I'm not really anonymous - just don't do this enought to remember my ID!!

You are too funny! This post made me laugh. Just an interesting side note-I noticed your "Stay Calm and Carry On" sign- one of my first cousins on my mom's side designed that. Small world:) Hope you are doing well and again I love reading your blog. Thanks for the laugh.

Correction- "Keep Calm and Carry On" Oops...:)

Be prepared... my son did this until he was 2!! Everytime he threw a tantrum, or was sad.

You are such a spaz with all of your innocent sounding metaphors for what Owen likes! This is pretty funny and it is certainly stamped with your own patented sense of humor that you always have when it comes to being light hearted about honest and sometimes serious things...
If women really wonder why men are so attracted to those things, Owen's situation is the perfect example to point to. 20, 30, 40 years later, etc., we don't forget the first important lesson we learned in life.
