Confessions

Here it is. I'm laying it all out there. Are you ready? Here goes: Valentines Day is NOT my favorite holiday. Or my second favorite, or third, and possibly not fourth. I'm sure it's in the top ten, but I can't quite tell yet where it fits in.

I know my husband doesn't like it either. He hates the unnecessary gift-giving pressure, and the commercialization of it all. To him it's just another marketing ploy for retailers to take your money. Some evil plot.

I don't think it's all bad. I love dressing the girls in pink and red from head to toe with giant bows. (One of them MAY be done with that this year, we'll see...) And I love making my famous sugar cookies to give away, although they usually get eaten too fast to give them to anyone. Sorry friends. And I think showing love to, well, our loved ones is super important, but we should be doing that anyway. Why do they need chocolate hearts too? Ok, I really like the chocolate hearts, but only when they are filled with peanut butter.....yum.

I am trying to like it. Every year I try to have a good attitude about it. But I literally break out into a cold sweat walking the aisles trying to figure out which kid will want to pass out which Valentine, and don't forget teachers, neighbors, friends, family. Wait, I just did this; Christmas.

This year Ally and I got online and I let her pick out which Valentine to do for her class. We're doing homemade this year! Ohhh, look at me go. She chose a heart shaped crayon that we made by melting broken crayons in heart shaped muffin pans. We used our friends Cricut to cut out a zillion hearts from paper and stuck the crayons on them with a message: You Melt My Heart. Eight boxes of broken crayons later, and 50 new heart shaped crayons, they are ready to go.

See? I am trying to put forth an effort. I even put out decorations. I hope to one day embrace this holiday of love. But until then, I'll gladly enjoy the Reese's Peanut Butter Hearts. Why do they taste so much better in the shape of a heart?? Why do you think I named my daughter Reese? OK, NOT REALLY.

What do YOU think of Valentines Day?

You are right babes, I am a Valentines Day scrooge. Ba Humbug.

But I DO love you on that day, as I do on the other 364 days of the year. :)

I used to like Valentine's Day, until my Don taught me the error of my ways. He's never done Valentine's Day - even when we were dating. So, now we do something small for our kids, but nothing for each other. So, you're not alone! :o)

You are so funny! I don't know why they taste better in the shape of a heart, but gosh darnit they do! I am very impressed with the valentines you made with Ally. I am all about the box of valentines at the store. I dont know how you do it.

I would rather get flowers or a gift "just because" and not because it is a holiday.
I do like to decorate. OHH and this year Im in charge of the wards Valentine Dinner Dance so right now all I can think is Valentines!!!!!!!1

Don: Suck it up and buy her a flippin' peanut butter heart man! ;-) Jenni: You are doing a great job making the best of a holiday you're not super pumped about. I'm a little ambivalent about Valentine's Day. I like it, but we don't make a huge deal about it. Still recovering from Christmas as you said. The last V-Day party I threw for our little playgroup, one of them mom's (no longer in the ward I might add) launched into a tirade against all the sugar we give our kids on the holidays...all the while surrounded my cookies, cupcakes, candy, etc. I was a little burned out after that! Anyhow, you really can't complain about a holiday that promotes love, peanut butter filled heart shaped chocolates and sugar cookies!

I don't mind it. I think it breaks up the monotony of winter. My advice; keep it simple and keep it small. Don't worry over what Valentine's your kids will give. They will give whatever you have and like it!!!;) We usually don't do anything for extended family. Usually we give our kids a book, just for something different, and Toran and I wing it. Depends on what else is going on at the time.

I can go either way for V-Day. But it is nice to get an un-expected present.

I am requesting a picture of your cool home made Valentines. What a great idea!

I did those valentines last year and it was a hit! I am probably going to do it again next year...this year I wsa too lazy to do them :) props to you for doing that cute little valentine!

I hate the commercialization of the holiday but love any excuse to tell those i love that I do in a fun way.

I don't do neighbor gifts or things like that...just the ones for the girls class and their teachers. It's too stressful to do that rest and like you said, we just did it for christmas :)

p.s. Cute comment by your "other" :)
